Liga Portuguesa

Sporting Clube de Portugal conceded a 1-1 draw against Sporting de Braga this Monday, April 7, 2025, at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, during the 28th round of the Primeira Liga. This result caused the ‘Lions’ to lose the top spot in the league to Benfica, who now have 68 points, two more than Sporting.

Sporting opened the scoring in the 15th minute of the first half with a goal from Viktor Gyökeres, marking his 31st goal of the competition. However, in the 87th minute, 18 year old striker Afonso Patrão, who had come off the bench shortly before, equalized for Braga. In stoppage time, at 90+5 minutes, Braga was reduced to ten men following the sending off of João Moutinho.

With this draw, Sporting dropped to second place with 66 points, while Braga climbed to third place with 57 points, overtaking FC Porto, who remain with 56 points after their 4-1 defeat to Benfica in the same round.

Sporting coach Rui Borges expressed his dissatisfaction with the result, emphasizing the need to stay focused in the upcoming matches to regain the league leadership. Sporting now faces a challenging sequence of games in the next rounds, including direct clashes against other title contenders. Meanwhile, Braga looks to solidify their position among the top three and secure a spot in European competitions for next season.
