Sporting Secures Key 2-0 Victory Over Rio Ave in Taça de Portugal Semifinals

Taça de Portugal

Sporting Clube de Portugal took a significant step toward the Taça de Portugal final with a 2-0 win over Rio Ave at the Estádio José Alvalade. This result gives the Lions a comfortable advantage heading into the second leg of the semifinals, scheduled for April 23.

The standout performer of the night was Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, who once again stole the show by scoring a penalty in the iconic Panenka style. This was his eighth goal in the last five matches, bringing his season tally to an astonishing 43 goals. Despite several clear chances, Gyökeres was unable to add more goals from open play.

From the very start, Sporting dominated the match, creating numerous scoring opportunities. The opening goal came from Geny Catamo, who found the net with a precise finish. Trincão and Spanish full back Iván Fresneda also played key roles in driving the team’s attacking momentum.

This victory not only brings Sporting closer to the final, where they could face either Benfica or third division underdog Tirsense, but also highlights the team’s resurgence after a challenging period. Gyökeres’ return from injury in February has been instrumental in this revival.

With a two goal advantage, Sporting heads into the second leg in a strong position but remains aware that Rio Ave could still pose a challenge in their fight for a place in the Taça de Portugal final.
